For over 27 years, David Pickles has been a central figure in the City of Pickering, serving his community with passion and a vision for a prosperous, inclusive future. As the long-serving Regional Councillor for Ward 3, David has been re-elected multiple times, a clear reflection of the trust and confidence the residents of Pickering have in his leadership.
David’s journey in public service began in 1997 when he was first elected to the Council of what was then the Town of Pickering. With a Bachelor of Environmental Studies (Honours Geography) from the University of Waterloo, David’s early career saw him working for the Provincial Government of Ontario for over 30 years. There, he gained extensive experience in environmental assessments, natural resources policies, and Indigenous relations. His deep understanding of these areas has been pivotal in shaping Pickering’s growth and ensuring it remains a sustainable and thriving community.
As the Vice Chair of the Regional Planning and Economic Development Committee, and previously the Chair of the Regional Health and Social Services Committee, David has played a significant role in driving key initiatives that benefit both Pickering and the broader Durham Region. His expertise in urban planning and environmental protection has been crucial in projects ranging from infrastructure improvements to business attraction efforts. Under his stewardship, Pickering has seen significant progress, with developments that cater to residents of all ages, particularly focusing on youth, seniors, and local businesses.
David’s service to the community has not gone unnoticed. His commitment to public service has earned him prestigious accolades, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013 and the Platinum Jubilee Award in 2022. These awards recognize his exceptional service and dedication to the community, solidifying his reputation as a leader who consistently prioritizes the needs of others.
Beyond the large-scale, transformative initiatives, David has also worked tirelessly to address local issues that impact the daily lives of Pickering residents. Whether it’s improving neighbourhood lighting for safety, installing new sidewalks, or ensuring road repairs like filling potholes, David has consistently shown that no issue is too small when it comes to improving the quality of life in his city.
David’s leadership is further demonstrated in his work as the former Chair of the City’s Pickering Advisory Committee on Race Relations and Equity (PACRRE). He has been a staunch advocate for celebrating diversity, fostering positive community relations, and ensuring that all voices are heard and respected in Pickering’s governance. The important work of the PACCRRE eventually led to the City’s recent adoption of its first Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion strategy.
At the heart of David’s service is his deep connection to the community. Together with his wife, Brenda, a self-employed accountant and small business owner, and their two daughters and grandson, David has lived in the Brock Ridge neighbourhood of Ward 3 for over 30 years. This strong local tie has given him a unique understanding of the community’s needs and aspirations, helping him better advocate for his constituents at both the city and regional levels.
Reflecting on his career, David credits his parents as his greatest role models. Raised in London, Ontario, his childhood was filled with outdoor activities, sports, and family time. These formative years instilled in him the values of honesty, fairness, and hard work—principles that continue to guide his leadership today.
Despite his extensive career in public service, David remains grounded in his personal life. He emphasizes the importance of balancing work with family time and personal interests. Whether it’s spending time with his loved ones, enjoying gardening, or reading history and science fiction, David recognizes the value of recharging and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Looking forward, David’s vision for Pickering is one of responsible growth and improvement. He remains committed to tackling the challenges and seizing the opportunities that lie ahead, always with the well-being of his community in mind. While the role of a councillor can sometimes be challenging, especially when dealing with difficult individuals, David’s resilience is fuelled by the support of his family, colleagues, and friends.
When asked what advice he would give to his younger self, David answers with wisdom and humility: “Enjoy time with family and friends, walk more trails and beaches with a loved one, and invest wisely—both in life experiences and personal relationships.”
As David continues his work, his legacy of service to Pickering is undeniable. His leadership has helped shape the city into the vibrant, diverse, and sustainable community it is today, and his commitment to its future ensures that his contributions will continue to benefit Pickering for generations to come.
David Pickles is not just a councillor; he is a dedicated public servant, a proud family man, and a community leader whose decades of service have left an indelible mark on Pickering. His work, both big and small, has improved the lives of countless residents and will be remembered as a cornerstone of his remarkable legacy.
